Cookie Policy

Effective date: August 20, 2026

This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, which categories this site uses, and how to control them. It supplements our Privacy Policy.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file stored in your browser by a website or by a third party whose content appears on it. Cookies let a site remember things between page loads. Related technologies do similar jobs: pixels and web beacons (tiny invisible images that record that a page or ad was loaded), local storage (data kept in the browser), and device or advertising identifiers.

Cookies set by the site you are visiting are called first-party. Cookies set by another company whose content is embedded in the page — an advertising network, for example — are called third-party. On this site, the cookies that matter most are third-party advertising cookies.

Categories of cookies used on this site

1. Strictly necessary cookies

These make the site work: page caching so articles load quickly, load balancing, and basic security functions such as detecting abusive traffic. The site cannot function properly without them, and they do not track you across other websites.

2. Performance and analytics cookies

These help us understand, in aggregate, which articles are read, how readers arrive, and where pages fail. We use this to decide what to write and to fix problems. We do not use analytics to identify individuals.

3. Advertising cookies

This is the significant category on this site. Advertising is served through Google AdSense. Google and other third-party vendors use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites on the internet, to limit how often you see the same ad, to measure whether ads worked, and to detect click fraud. Google’s advertising cookies include the DoubleClick DART cookie.

We do not set these cookies ourselves, we do not receive the data they collect, and we do not control what they are used for. Their use is governed by the providers’ own policies — see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

What we do not use

We do not use cookies for lead generation, email retargeting, cross-device identity matching that we control, or selling reader data. We do not operate accounts, so there are no login or preference cookies.

Your choices

Opt out of personalized advertising

Opting out stops ads from being personalized. It does not remove advertising, and it does not make this site free of cookies entirely.

Consent, where it is required

Where law requires consent before non-essential cookies are set — including for readers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland — advertising and analytics cookies should only be set after consent is given, and you can withdraw consent at any time using your browser controls or the consent mechanism presented to you.

Browser controls

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, block third-party cookies specifically, or browse privately. The controls live in your browser’s settings, usually under Privacy or Site Settings:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies.
  • Safari: Settings → Privacy → Prevent cross-site tracking / Manage Website Data.
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Enhanced Tracking Protection and Cookies.
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions.

Blocking all cookies is your right and will not lock you out of any article here. It may affect page caching and will not stop ads from appearing.
