Advertising Disclosure

This page explains how Guide makes money, what that does and does not buy, and what your options are regarding advertising. We would rather state it plainly than bury it.

How this site is funded

Guide is supported entirely by display advertising, currently served through Google AdSense. When you visit a page, advertising slots are filled automatically by Google’s ad systems. We are paid based on ad impressions and interactions.

Advertising is the reason this site can be free to read and free of a sales motive. We would rather show you an ad than sell your details to someone who wants to sell you a service.

What advertising does not buy

  • No influence over content. Advertisers cannot review, approve, request, edit, or veto any article. They do not see articles before publication.
  • No topic steering. We do not choose, frame, soften, or avoid a subject because of its effect on ad revenue.
  • No endorsements. An advertisement appearing here is not a recommendation. We do not vet, verify, or approve advertisers, their claims, or their offers, and we usually do not know in advance which advertisers will appear on a page.
  • No paid content, ever. We do not accept sponsored posts, paid guest posts, advertorial, link insertions, affiliate links, referral fees, or paid placements. We do not sell direct advertising. Pitches for any of these are declined without reply.
  • No lead generation. We do not collect reader details for advertisers, and we do not sell, rent, or share reader information with them.

Why you may see ads from companies we would never recommend

This is worth understanding. Advertising in this subject area is bought aggressively by insurers, law firms, benefit-claim services, and financial companies, because these are valuable search terms. Ads are placed automatically by Google’s systems based on the page and on the viewer, not selected by us.

So you may see an advertisement from exactly the kind of company our articles tell you to be careful with. That is a consequence of automated ad delivery, not a signal from us. Our editorial position is stated in the articles themselves: we never name, rank, or recommend a specific company, and we point readers to free government and nonprofit help first.

How ads are labeled and placed

Advertisements are visually distinguishable from editorial content and are placed around articles rather than woven into them. We do not disguise ads as article text, headings, navigation, or download buttons, and we do not place them to encourage accidental clicks. If you ever find an ad on this site that is confusable with our editorial content, please report it — that is a problem we want to fix.

How advertising uses data

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites on the internet. Google’s use of advertising cookies, including the DoubleClick DART cookie, enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this and/or other sites.

We do not receive the personal information these vendors collect. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.

Your choices

Opting out makes advertising less personalized. It does not remove ads, and it does not restrict any content here.

Problems with an ad

If you see an advertisement on this site that appears deceptive, malicious, adult, or otherwise inappropriate, email support@guide.upcomingscreen.com with the page URL and a description or screenshot. We cannot control individual ads directly, but we can report them and adjust category blocks.
